Wellington Cup back to 3200 metres…

Great Sensation: 3 Cups in the 1960’s.

The Wellington Cup: I have amended this post since I have learned  the Wellington Racing Club has decided to revert the race back to 3200 metres as it was for many decades. Past great winners, Kiwi and giant mare Empire rose won the cup before going on to win the 3200 metre Melbourne Cup the following year after  their Wellington cup victories. Great Sensation won three consecutive races in the 1960’s with some decent weight, and also Castletown in the early 90’s, but only two races were consecutive.

It was my favourite summer galloping meeting, with the Wellington Steeplechase meeting in winter (used to be three days too) my Great Sensation won three consecutive races in the 1960’s with some decent weight, and also Castletown in the early 90’s, but only two races were consecutive. It was my favourite summer galloping meeting, with the Wellington Steeplechase meeting in winter (used to be three days too) my favour winter meeting.

I have been highly critical of the decision made a few years ago to shorten the race to 2400 metres. I am very pleased that the WRC has changed its mind to revert back to the ultimate distance. Lets hope the race can regain its popularity and status as a G1 event.
