Kathy Cross put herself in line to be the first winner of the newly-merged Hutt Valley Sports Awards by claiming a special piece of cricketing history.

Cross last week became the first female to officiate at ICC World Twenty20 level by umpiring the women’s match featuring Pakistan and Bangladesh in Chennai

World-wide there are only a small number of women umpires. Unlike many other top sports, internationals women’s cricket is usually umpired by men.
